Call for speakers for the June International Conference
Conference theme
The Power to Transform Research:
Looking to a Tech-driven future
Please note: this call for speakers has now closed.
We are delighted to announce the return of the ASC International Conference for 2024. This is an immersive, multi-stream residential conference which will be held at the campus of Royal Holloway, University of London at Egham, about an hour to the south-west of Central London and close to Heathow airport. It takes place on the 19th and 20th June 2024.
We are interested in receiving proposals to present on these or any related topics of interest to our professional community:
- How can the research industry achieve transformation? Critical thinking on the dogmas that need to be challenged, structural change needed, or case studies of transformations that have been achieved.
- Pathways to innovation. How to create an environment that provides “permission to fail”. Insights into how businesses can afford the people time and cash to experiment with new tech that might not pay off.
- Practical considerations of living with AI. Is it time to consider AI another member of the team rather than a tool? Where will the insights come from as we adopt AI? Further consideration of the ethical and social issues around an increasing reliance on AI in our profession.
- Navigating the Modern Data Stack. Delving into its integration with research. Seeking critical insights or case studies on how the Modern Data Stack is being adapted and applied in research settings, and considering its role in enhancing and complementing research practices.
- Changing perspectives. Celebrating the rise of ResTech and data from the basement to the boardroom. Case studies and examples on how to transform the relationship between research and technology and data.
- What does ‘good’ look like today? We are seeking critical thinking or case studies on how to assess quality and value, and on strategies to ensure that research remains true to its principles while managing the unavoidable tensions between quality, speed and cost.
- A new lens on engagement and fraud. New ideas and approaches to stem the tide of disengagement among research participants. Practical considerations and examples of industry initiatives or tech-led developments in achieving better engagement and combating fraud.
- Ensuring a sustainable future for research. Defining the considerations, such as the increasing use of energy to power AI, and how to build this into our thinking. Practical examples of ways the impact of research on the environment can be reduced.

Guidelines for speakers
If you are interested in presenting, please bear in mind that we ask all presenters to work within the following guidelines*
(*These guidelines are for traditional one or two-handed presentations. If you would like to propose a different format, such as a debate, workshop, panel session etc. we welcome these ideas also, and the guidelines for those can be discussed separately. )
- Presentations must be the original work of the presenters and any other named author.
- Presenters are typically allowed 20 mins to speak plus 5 minutes for Q&A.
- This is an in-person event and presenters are expected to present in person. They should be available to present on either day of the conference.
- Written papers will be accepted and are encouraged by ASC but it is not a requirement for this conference to provide a written paper.
- One free-of-charge pass to the conference will be provided to the lead presenter for each accepted presentation for the day on which the presentation is scheduled. Tickets may be purchased £200 per day for presenters wishing to attend both days and co-presenters for each day they wish to attend.
- Overnight accommodation at this residential conference is available at cost price to presenters and co-presenters at their option.
- In line with ASC’s policy of sharing knowledge freely, presenters are asked to allow ASC to make their paper and presentation available to view on the ASC website after the event.
- Subject to funding, ASC intends to record some or all of the presentations and make these available free of charge to our professional community after the conference through the ASC website.
- Presenters agree to follow the ASC’s presentation guidelines which disallow product promotion and ask presenters to refrain from corporate branding on their presentations.
Bookings are now open for the conference, and there are some attractive Super Earlybird offers available for the next few weeks. As the deadline for these offers may have closed before we have confirmed the list of speakers, we do not want you to miss out if you were intending to attend the conference anyway. So we will be happy to refund anything you have overpaid if your paper is accepted.
Please contact admin@asc.org.uk if you have any questions.
