Mike Trotman 1954-2024
We are very sad to report that Mike Trotman, a long-term ASC committee member and colleague and friend to many of us associated with ASC, passed away at the end of January.
Mike served on the ASC Executive Committee for 17 years, until standing down at the end of 2020 due to increasingly poor health. He was a passionate and committed member of the association and an advocate for standards and better practice in our sector. He was a judge on the ASC/MRS technology award for many years, custodian of the ASC website for over a decade, worked on the ASC’s TabsML working group and in the last couple of years, took up the mantle of ASC Secretary.
In his professional career, Mike was a highly respected technical specialist in the field of survey research and data. He worked for many research firms, both in managerial positions and, in the later part of his career, as an independent consultant. In every role, he always got stuck in to the technological aspects of the work. Nothing was ever technically too fiendish for Mike to figure out.
Mike was the personification of good company, which he both provided and enjoyed greatly. His ‘DP drinks’ which he organised every few months at a variety of carefully selected watering holes across Central London were greatly appreciated by many – and made perfect sense to those who knew Mike’s family were originally Vintners in the City of London, and that his very first job had been working in the family’s wine bar.
Mike’s funeral is taking place on 21 February at 13:00 at Salisbury Crematorium, Salisbury, Wiltshire, with refreshments provided afterwards. Professional associates and friends are welcome to attend. Please email administrator@asc.org.uk if you wish to come.
In recent years Mike was a volunteer with the Royal Courts of Justice, and his family have asked for donations in his honour to be made to the charitable organisation Support Through Court.
His friends from the DP Drinks circle will be holding an evening event in London to commemorate and celebrate Mike’s of Mike life. We will update this page when this is confirmed.
We send our sincere condolences to Mike’s family.
We will continue to update this page as more information becomes available.
